WINTER 2018
ONE OF THE JOYS THAT I HAVE AS ARCHBISHOP OF NEW YORK is to spend time speaking with people when I visit our parishes, schools, healthcare facilities, Catholic Charities agencies, and other wonderful programs and institutions that make up the Church in New York. It’s an honor for me to see and learn about all the inspiring efforts being made by priests and deacons, religious men and women, and so many faithful laity in the service of God’s people, and I’m often surprised by the sheer volume of good work that goes on every day, often out of the public eye.
At the same time, I regularly hear from many of you that you would like to know more about the offices and people of the archdiocese as well as about the programs that the archdiocese undertakes.
As Catholics, we take seriously, as we should, Jesus’ instruction not to “blow our own horn.” Sometimes, though, I fear we might be modest to a fault, because there is a tremendous amount of good being done that nobody knows about!
That’s why I’m so excited to be able to share with you this first edition of Archways, which will highlight just some of what’s going on around the Archdiocese of New York. In this first edition, you’ll find:
An introduction to the Archdiocese of New York; who we are and who we help
An overview of the Office of Adult Faith Formation and all the programming it offers to parishes and individual Catholics
A feature on Catholic Charities as it concludes the celebration of its 100th Anniversary of “providing help and creating hope,” with a special look at the Archdiocesan Day of Service that was held last spring as part of the anniversary observance
A look at our inspiring archdiocesan schools, which are the subject of national recognition
Archways is more than just a chance for us to brag a little about the great things happening in the archdiocese. Four times per year – twice in printed copies mailed to your homes, twice as a digital publication – we’ll not only take a look at what is going on, but also, please God, encourage others to participate, become involved, and make a difference in one of the parishes, schools, or charitable endeavors of the Archdiocese of New York.
Like me, I hope that you will look forward to each new edition of Archways, and that you’ll come away more informed – and just a little bit prouder – of all that we accomplish together in service to the Lord and His Church.
Faithfully in Christ,
Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York
