SUMMER 2022
IF YOU'RE PLANNING A RETREAT, your choice of where to go depends on your individual needs and goals. Here are six more retreat centers to choose from in the Archdiocese of New York (see "Mapping Peace").
Monastery of Bethlehem Livingston Manor; monasteryofbethlehemnewyork.com/retreat
A community of contemplative sisters offers a “solitary, silent retreat” at this monastery. If so inclined, retreatants may join the sisters for morning and evening prayer and even help out with the gardening and other daily duties.
Linwood Spiritual Center Rhinebeck; linwoodspiritual.com
Amid spectacular scenery in the Hudson Highlands, offering a range of spiritual and wellness retreats, including a yoga program, Aug. 3-7, and Stewards of Creation, Sept. 23-25. Individual retreats may also be booked.
Marist Brothers Center at Esopus maristbrotherscenter.org
This one is for the young people: Each summer, the brothers host nine one-week camps for children and adults with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities, deaf children, children living with cancer, and inner-city students. For the teen and young-adult volunteers who staff the camp, it is a one-of-a-kind service opportunity and a deeply spiritual learning experience.
Mount Alvernia Retreat Center Wappinger Falls; mtalvernia.org
Weekend and one-day retreats in an Italianate hilltop complex in the Hudson Valley, focusing on healing for the physically ill, spiritual guidance, marital enrichment, and addiction recovery.
National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Middletown; ourladyofmtcarmelshrine.com/visit
On 60 acres in the rolling hills of Orange County, the shrine is ideal for a one-day retreat. Visitors can stroll and pray in the Meditation Garden and St. Therese Garden, and visit the Carmelite Cemetery and the Shrine to Our Lady of Knock. Mass is offered daily at 11 a.m. and confessions are available; no overnight stays.
St. Joseph Retreat Center Staten Island; sjretreatcenter.org
A 17-acre haven situated on New York City’s Staten Island, offering one-day and multi-day directed programs as well as private group and individual retreats. Administered by the Daughters of Divine Charity.
